Vintage Mirror

Somehow I had completely forgotten about this mirror! I guess we spray painted it when I was moving in….and then I’m not sure what happened. I just happened to see it one day while doing laundry. It was not in the best shape. In fact, the painter’s tape from the spray painting attempt 3 years ago was still in tact. Yikes.

I removed the tape and sanded it down a bit.

Sanded

I painted it a creamy ivory and gave it some character by lightly feathering some parts with the metallic paint in antique gold.

And this is what I ended up with! I just want to note, that this is actually version 2 or this mirror. Originally, I had read a tutorial on how to ‘distress’ a frame using candle wax. This didn’t work out for me. The mirror had ended up looking a  little too distressed (like, it might have been recovered from a shipwreck). It was also hot pink…which did not go over well with the boyfriend. In the end, I ended up re-sanding, re-taping, and re-painting the whole thing.

I have to say, I’m pretty happy with this!mirror_tulipsandaterrier

Here’s a close up of what I did with the metallic paint. I like the way it gives it a bit of a vintage look. Unfortunately, I scratched up the actual mirror while removing the paint/candle wax/painter’s tape from my earlier experiments. Good learning experience I guess. Safe to say, I’m not attempting anything with candle wax in the near future. Anyways.

I love the way it came out! And it was actually pretty quick to paint.
