DIY Stenciled Throw Pillows

I just love throw pillows. They are such a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up any room! And since they’re so quick and inexpensive to make, they’re just perfect for incorporating current trends into your decor without breaking the bank! You might remember the West Elm inspired pintuck throw pillows I posted a few months ago..

Stencils are also pretty great! No need to go out and buy some fancy upholstery fabric, you could probably do this with an old sheet! I love how you can take a shape you love and customize the pattern with a color that works well with the rest of your decor.

The nautical theme has been making a big comeback recently. And thanks to Martha, a craft stencil made my anchor-print throw pillow a reality.

Stenciling fabric is actually way easier than you think. All you need is:

  • Fabric
  • Acrylic craft paint in a color of your choice
  • Stencil
  • Fabric medium (helps paint adhere to fabric)
  • foam pouncer, mini roller, or stencil brush
  • painter’s tape (to tape down fabric and stencil)

After cutting your fabric to size, iron it well and tape it down. You probably want to lay kraft paper or paper towels below the fabric in case the paint leaks through.

Press stencil to fabric and tape. I’ve also use spray adhesive in the past, which is great for larger stencils. If you have a single object that you are stenciling repeatedly, I didn’t find it necessary as I could just hold it down.

Mix  part fabric medium to two parts craft pain. I poured small amounts of the paint mixture onto a foam plate to use as a palette. Dab pouncer/stencil brush/roller into paint mixture. Dab off excess (this is super important! too much paint can cause the design to leak under the stencil).

Paint desired pattern onto fabric!

Once your pattern is complete, let the paint dry and then seal by ironing the back of the fabric. You are then ready to make your pillows!

These are super easy to make. You really don’t even need to have decent sewing skills, honestly. If you have a sewing machine and know how to thread it, you should be all set. To demonstrate, I made a little tutorial using Power Point! I don’t know why everyone hates Power Point, I think it’s great. But then again, I’m a total nerd who loves diagrams and spreadsheets. My pillow form was 18″ by 18″.

Obviously, the pattern could have been planned out a bit better, but I love the way it looks!

The second pillow was stenciled using the Casablanca stencil from Cutting Edge stencils. I like how stenciling allows you to use a variety of shapes in complimentary colors!

A certain someone has decided to walk directly into the frame…and doesn’t look one bit impressed with my throw pillows.
