Dollar Store Glitter Vase - Tulips & A Terrier

I love the dollar store. Only the real dollar store though, not those fake dollar stores that sell stuff for more than a dollar (I’m talking to you, Family Dollar). You can find some great stuff here! Given a little creativity, it can turn into a total gold mine! Painting is a great way to apply said creativity. As is covering things in glitter.

This is what I started with. Nothing too special here. It actually just looks like an oversized glass. And costs, you guessed it, a dollar!

My other supplies included glitter, Mod Podge, a foam brush, and a plastic spoon. You also want to cover your work area with some kraft paper or something…glitter has a tendency to get a bit messy. A lint brush does do a pretty effective job at cleaning it up, in case you need it.

This is about as simple as it gets. Coat the inside of the base with a layer of Mod Podge using a foam brush. This is why I went with the cylindrical shape, you want to make sure your hand can fit in the vase to apply the Mod Podge.

You then dump a bit of glitter into the vase and tilt and turn the vase to move the glitter around to coat the inside. I tapped the sides a little when I was doing it to dust off the excess. Depending on how much glitter you dumped in initially, you might need to add more in to fully coat the inside. I used the spoon to lightly maneuver the glitter around. You just don’t want to press down too hard and scrape off the Mod Podge.

Once your vase is coated, you let it dry. For some reason, mine took forever to dry! I probably used too much Mod Podge (if you still see the Mod Podge and its white, it is not dry).

Once dry, tap out excess glitter onto paper towel or kraft paper. If you see any non-glittered parts to your vase, you can apply some more Mod Podge to those parts and add more glitter. I recycled the excess on my paper towel when I did this.

Once that dries (or if you don’t need to touch up a few spots), just paint on another layer of Mod Podge to seal. Let that dry, and you’re done!

Now, I’m not entirely sure of how well this glitter will hold up to water so this is probably not best used with fresh flowers. Since I had some hydrangeas around the house, I stuck them in for a few minutes without water to photograph it.

I’m quite ashamed to admit this, but these are stolen hydrangeas. You see, I’ve been insanely jealous of the homes in my neighborhood with beautiful, luscious hydrangea bushes in various shades of pinks, blues, and violets. Sadly, I have no green thumb to speak of. While I’ve been planning on planting a hydrangea bush, I haven’t quite gotten around to it yet. Knowing this, my boyfriend came home one night with some freshly picked hydrangeas! Not to worry, these hydrangeas weren’t stolen from someone’s well tended garden. They were growing outside of a condo complex and part of a massive bush. They’re undoubtedly maintained by professional landscapers who’ll never miss them. I will get around to planting some of my own, I promise. But these are stunning, aren’t they?
