Painted Mason Jars!

Do you have something that seems like it comes so easily, almost naturally, to most people that you just can’t seem to get the hang of? For some people, it’s math. For others, it might be spelling. For me…it’s sports. Push ups, swimming, really anything that requires any sort of athletic ability. Try as I might, I just can’t be good at any of it. And I’m fine with that. I’ve long ago accepted the fact that I’m never going to be some star athlete and am perfectly comfortable with just staying active enough to be healthy. In addition to sports, I’m also terrible at science…but I haven’t had to use that since college so I guess that hasn’t affected me too significantly.

Also, apparently, painting mason jars. This was most devastating to me of all. It all seems so simple..take a mason jar, paint it, distress to your liking, and end up with a charming piece of decor that cost you mere pennies to make! Well, dollars I guess..but you know what I mean.

Anyways. I’ve attempted this three of four times and have never been happy with the results. I just didn’t get what I was doing wrong! First coat goes on well and good. When I then go to apply the second coat, the first coat seems to come off right with it! Unlike my shortcomings in the athletic world..this, I was not willing to accept. I’m good at painting! I paint furniture! I paint picture frames! It’s right up my alley!

So, I’ve decided to live with my shameful secret. Instead choosing to tint mason jars, and spray paint them (not to mention the horrors I’ve created using Martha Stewart’s ‘Frosted Glass’ paint). But they continued to bother me. Taunting me from Pinterest…’so quick and easy!’ the captions said. Right.

So, when I saw this tutorial on the process from the ultimate authority on the subject, I decided to give it another try. One last time before I accept defeat and buy them from Etsy like the rest of the world. Reading through it, it seemed like I had it about right…except I had been using a foam brush, not a regular bristle paintbrush. I had assumed that the two were generally interchangeable, but I’m not an expert by any means.

And it seems to have worked! I’m not positive on whether the foam brush was the culprit, or whether it was the fact that I was super careful with them given previous failures..but I’m glad to announce that I finally have some painted mason jars to call my own!

I got a bit festive with it being the first week of fall and all and decided to go with orange. I know, very uncharacteristic. I can be quite unpredictable at times.

I’m so glad to have finally gotten the hang of this! Next, maybe I’ll run a marathon or something. Probably not, on second thought.

I’m so glad to help — and I seem to recall an email exchange with you about this project. Hmmmm. … am I right? They look lovely. And I LOVE orange! And your photography is amazing!

So, do you think I can feature your jars on the blog and Facebook page? Let me know — I think they would be perfect for a fall mason jar project round-up I’m planning …

And thanks for the link back to my blog! Always so greatly appreciated!

    🙂 Linda

Hi Linda! Thank you so much! I don’t think I ever emailed…thought I was the only one struggling with it, too ashamed haha. Of course! I would be honored to be featured :). Thank you again for the tutorial and continuous mason jar inspiration!
