DIY Ornament Wreath

Hello friends! I hope you are all having a great week! Today, I thought I’d share one of my favorite DIY projects ever! A super easy, super impressive, diy ornament wreath!

Since there is only roughly a week to go till Thanksgiving, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to begin openly preparing for Christmas. I’m not sure if you’v noticed the lack of Thanksgiving-ness here on the blog, but honestly I’m just not too big on it. Sure, it’s important to be thankful for everything you have and lovely to get to spend time with family..but I’m not about to stick a bunch of inflatable turkeys and pilgrims on my front lawn to prove that point. I understand that there are many much more tasteful Thanksgiving decorations that don’t involve inflatable turkeys, but I’d still rather just skip to my favorite.

Christmas, as you might have guessed, is my hands down favorite. I’m one of those people that gets WAY too excited about the holiday season WAY before it’s socially acceptable to do so (early to mid October, usually). I do, however, try to have the courtesy to not subject those around me to this madness until it’s appropriate to do so. Meaning, I listen to Christmas music in the privacy of my own car and secretly hoard ornaments and ribbons. Please, let’s try to keep this a judgement free space.

Anyways! My need for a DIY ornament wreath arose last year when I couldn’t find a reasonably priced ornament wreath that complimented the rest of my holiday decor. I’m really big on coordinated spaces. And I did not spend years accumulating a collection of hot pink and metallic ornaments only to have the entire aesthetic ruined by a red and green ornament wreath. Clearly, I take this very seriously.

You need roughly 80 ornaments or so to complete the wreath. I had the hardest time finding ones that fit my vision at a reasonable price that I had almost given up on the idea..until I spotted two of those bulk packages at Home Goods for roughly 10 bucks a piece. Score. I used some silver dollar store ornaments and others I had on hand as fillers.

Since this was created pre-blog, I don’t have photos of the whole process but it’s simple enough to follow. I used the method involving a wire hanger from here!

Materials:

  • Wire hanger
  • Glue gun
  • Approximately 80 ball ornaments in varying sizes (including some small ones to fill in gaps)
  • Wide ribbon (preferably wired)

Instructions:

  1. Bend wire to form the hanger part into a circle and untwist the hook at the top.
  2. You are going to string the ornaments onto the hanger using the metal hooks, so check to make sure these are secure. The tutorial I used recommended using a hot glue gun to secure the tops of the ornaments. Gluing the tops of about 80 ornaments seemed rather time consuming, so I only did it to the ones that seemed like they could come loose. And my wreath has held up just fine!
  3. Begin sliding your ornaments onto the wire, alternating sizes and angles to cover the wire. Push the ornaments towards the end of the hanger to cluster them together and see how it looks. Like putting together a puzzle! You can hold the other end of the hanger with one hand for a while, but after some time it becomes easier to find someone to hold while you string. Or find somewhere to hang it.
  4. Once your hanger is saturated (maybe not the best choice of word, but I couldn’t think of another) with ornaments, re-twist the top of the hanger to close and secure in place.
  5. Make a loop over the the top of the wreath and hanger top using the ribbon and glue gun. My ribbon wasn’t wide enough to cover the hanger, so I had to make a double loop. This is where the wired part comes in handy. Add a bow!
  6. Hang in your desired space and admire!

Just a warning, I wouldn’t recommend hanging this outside as it’s quite fragile and you would hate to see all that work go to waste because of a strong gust of wind..so I would recommend this for indoor use only.

While I like to think that Jack too is admiring my ornament wreath, he is more likely admiring his own reflection in the ornaments. He’s quite narcissistic. I once caught him licking his own reflection in the mirror with his eyes closed. Weirdo.

Not sure if any of you noticed my own creepy reflection in some of the ornaments as I was taking these photos. But I’d love to hear what you think of the wreath! I have too many DIY ornament ideas this year and may need to free up some room on the tree, so I will probably end up with a second ornament wreath by the time the season is over.
