I know I’ve mentioned our bathroom makeover a few times here and there over the last couple of months and since I never posted about it, you probably thought I was making the whole thing up! Truthfully, we’ve been dragging our feet a bit. But the holidays around the corner means that someone other than ourselves is going to see the bathroom, so we finally buckled down and finished it! Last Saturday, the two of us spent the entire day sanding, and staining, and painting away while Jack sulked around the house (he hates not being the center of attention).
And I’m pleased to announce that it’s (mostly) finished! I say mostly because there are a few accents I would like to add, but with daylight being such a commodity these days I decided to snap a few photos while I had the chance.
But first, let me show you what we started with. Well, this was a bit after we started (and removed the cabinet doors to stain), but you get the idea. Basically, the ugliest bathroom you could think of. Oak, green walls, chrome fixtures..about as bad as it gets. You’re probably thinking, what on earth took you so long? Right, anyways.
Some paint, wood stain, a new light fixture and shower curtain later..voila! And I couldn’t be happier with the results! It feels like a completely different room.
Refinishing the cabinets and trim was the most time consuming part of the process but the oak needed to go. Those little rivets are quite the pain to sand. We then taped it off and stained with two coats of Minwax Espresso wood stain. We used Rub ‘n Buff in gold leaf to update those awful chrome fixtures to a much more appealing gold. This was my first experience with Rub ‘n Buff, and I’m totally a fan! Since you just, as the name suggests, rub it on..no need to tape off the area to spraypaint!
We were slightly concerned about having to install the light fixture. After all, neither of us have any electrical experience so there’s always that fear of blowing up the house. But it was actually super easy! And didn’t result in any explosions or fires!
And I’m glad to have found yet another use for my painted mason jars.
Instead of going out and purchasing new bathroom accessories, I decided to save some money and spraypaint everything gold. I had this little dish from Ikea that I use for things like bobby pins and hair elastics, and jewelry I don’t feel like putting away. It was previously just clear glass in a grayish tint, but made infinitely prettier thanks to a few coats of Rustoleum metallic gold.
And I scored this pretty little towel at Home Goods for a cool five bucks.
The wastebasket and cabinet hardware got a few coats of spraypaint as well. I totally fell in love with this Pottery Barn ruffled shower curtain, but found a much more sensible option here.
How do you like the finished product? I’m dying to hear what you think!

Oh my goodness, Lusine!! What a transformation! You changed some very simple things yet they made such a huge improvement. Wow.
Rub n buff sounds like something I’d love. I’d be on that asap if I wasn’t living in an apartment. Very inspired! Beautiful job!

Thanks so much Amy! It does feel like a completely different room! And we only spent about a hundred bucks (including the light fixture!). You should totally try the rub n buff! I’ve seen it used on furniture and accessories too, it supposedly adheres to lots of surfaces. Did I mention it comes in multiple shades of gold?
It looks so cute!! What a nice project to have all done.
