I’m really making an attempt to pace myself with the Christmas crafts here, and I know it’s still November..but I just can’t help myself this time around. You see, a friend and I have had plans to make these DIY ornaments for weeks. The supplies, picked up a few weeks ago, have been sitting in my ‘upcoming projects’ crate (formerly known as the chalk paint storage crate, which now sits in my craft room filled with supplies for upcoming projects!).
And after weeks of anticipation, the day to make our ornaments finally came! Our supplies consisted of:
- clear glass ornaments (in two sizes, 40% off at Michael’s!)
- craft and glass paint (supplemented by my existing supply of craft and glass paint)
- glitter! ( this set which I’ve been dying to use to it’s full potential)
- Stencils (we used snowflake stencils by Martha Stewart which I couldn’t find online, but these
seem similar). - Sparkly stickers (from the scrapbooking section)
- Mod Podge and foam pouncers
- Ribbon & a glue gun
We ended up incorporating a few other supplies I had lying around my craft room as well. The whole experience was so much fun! We basically started off with this amazing idea of coating the inside of ornaments with paint, and just built on that.
We used both glass and craft paint on the inside, and a word of advice – the craft paint is much easier to spread around the inside of the ornament. The glass paint has a thicker consistency, so I would reserve that for the outside if you have the option. You need to shake pretty vigorously to spread it all around the ornament. Once they are coated on the inside, you just want to pour out the excess and proceed with embelishments!
In addition to the stencils (same technique as on these votives), we used mod podge and glitter to make polka dots! I’ve done this a few times, and always love the result! Because what isn’t made better by glittery polka dots? You can see my how-to here!
We even got creative with a mercury glass effect! We would’ve experimented more with the mercury glass but it was extremely windy outside, which made spraypainting difficult (and dangerous..especially when the wind changes direction suddenly.)
How cool would this look with some gemstones? I love the effect of the mercury glass! The inside is coated with metallic gold craft paint.
Lace trim gave this one a bit of a feminine touch (and snowflake stickers for a little holiday sparkle).
Here’s the classy one of the bunch! This was just opaque white craft paint on the inside and the black ribbon was secured in place using a glue gun.
I’m really loving the combination of red and turquoise lately! And using a mint green instead of the typical Christmas green adds a little something unexpected.
I know, this is quite a schizophrenic array we have here. There were too many options, and we wanted to try them all out to see what worked best.
We were planning to give them as gifts, so I guess it’s a good thing that they will suit a variety of tastes!
Did I mention how much fun we had making them? Definitely a Sunday afternoon well spent!
I would love to know, which one is your favorite?

Oh my gosh… I LOVE the one with the black ribbon bow! MEGA chic. All your ornaments are SO cute.
And did you get that glass bowl from the dollar store??? I’m pretty sure I have the same one! 😀

Thanks Amy! I love that one too! I considered adding some gold polka dots, but glad I restrained myself :). Why, yes it is! I swear, that place is such a gold mine..
