Parisian Holiday!

Hello friends! I hope you all enjoyed the last few weeks of summer! Personally, I am super excited for fall! I can’t wait throw on some cozy sweaters, go apple picking, and eat lots of pumpkin flavored things! In other news, I just turned 30! And celebrated this milestone in the most spectacular fashion I could think of… A trip to a city I’ve dreamed of visiting for as long as I can remember! For the last couple of years, this has been my secret to aging gracefully..I plan a vacation around my birthday. Therefore, instead of bumming myself out about getting older, I just get excited about my upcoming vacation! You can read about last year’s trip to Iceland here, here, and here!

I couldn’t think of a city better than Paris in which to ring in the big 3-0! It’s just so..iconic! I’ve yearned to visit this magical place forever, and my obsession has only continued to grow over the last couple of months (as in, I’ve been watching Midnight in Paris, Amelie, Funny Face, and the last two episodes of Sex & The City basically on repeat).

And it certainly did not disappoint! I’ll be spreading out the details over a couple of posts. You know, so as not to overwhelm you with all of the amazingness of it all!

Here are a few highlights to start! I’ve also included some resources at the end of the post that I found particularly helpful throughout my (extensive) planning.

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

It goes without saying this is one stunning city. We stayed in an apartment in Le Marais, which was around the corner from the beautiful and serene Place des Vosges. Strolling through this adorable square, I had the chance to observe a little sliver of the Parisian lifestyle I’ve heard so much about  – laying on the grass with a nice book, or enjoying a bottle of wine with friends. Not something you come across often in Massachusetts, I’ll tell you. Possibly because drinking wine in public is frowned upon illegal, but still! It made me realize that I need to make more of an effort to seek out time for the things I enjoy more regularly.

The weather was (surprisingly) great throughout our trip! One day was somewhat cloudy.. but zero rain. And although I really shouldn’t be complaining, I was kind of hoping to see Paris in the rain at least once. But beautiful, sunny weather makes for lovely strolls along the Seine.

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

On our first day, we inadvertently covered most of central Paris on foot. I absolutely love the architecture throughout the city. Particularly, the apartment buildings with the Parisian roofs and wrought iron balconies..

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

The amount of detail is simply astonishing! Just imagine how long it must have taken to build this masterpiece!

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

This is actually Hotel De Ville (which seems to be similar to a city hall) and according to Wikipedia, the reconstruction took 19 years.

And I literally couldn’t get enough of the winding cobblestone streets and charming alleyways throughout the city. I got lost for hours and didn’t mind it for a second (until the throbbing foot pain set in..). I particularly enjoyed those around Le Marais and the Latin Quartier.

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

Although I can totally understand why this is the most visited city in the world, the amount of tourists we saw at some of the major attractions was like nothing I had ever seen before.  While this may have caused us to avoid some of the so-called ‘must see’ sights of the city, one simply cannot come to Paris and not see the Eiffel tower! And it didn’t matter how many times I saw it..every time I caught a glimpse of this monumental landmark, I couldn’t help but squeal. If you plan to visit yourself and would like to go up the tower, make sure to buy your tickets in advance. Trust me on this one…unless of course you have a desire to spend 2-3 hours in line with mobs of other tourists. With tickets, we waited about 15 minutes. If you have your heart set on going to the summit, I would suggest booking well in advance. The summit tickets were sold out when I was booking a week ahead of the trip, plus I heard that the view was better from the second level (since you are close enough to be able to identify the monuments) so I didn’t sweat it much.

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

On our final night in the city, we grabbed a bottle of wine and some snacks, and set up on a bench in front of the tower to watch it sparkle! It’s an experience that I know I’ll never forget. To say it was breathtaking would be an understatement.

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s kind of hard to take a bad picture of this place…

Since this is such a heavily visited city, there is a significant amount of information out there on everything from finding the perfect croissant to the best picnic spots around Paris. And truthfully, the amount of information available was a bit overwhelming at times. Included below are a few of my favorite sources as a first time visitor to the city of light! Feel free to share any tips you may have as this certainly won’t be my last visit to this magical place!

Paris - Tulips and A Terrier

GuidebooksRick Steves’ Paris 2014 was my favorite of the 4 guidebooks purchased for this trip. Packed full of basically everything you need to know, Rick did not disappoint us once! Tips on everything from avoiding the crowds, to self guided walks, to daytrips from Paris were all very detailed! A close second was the DK Eyewitness Paris Guide, which was also full of useful information plus great visuals!

Language: If you are planning to visit Paris, I highly recommend trying to pick up a bit of French before you go. Although many people speak English, we noticed an astronomical difference in the way we were treated following my pathetic attempts to butcher the language speak French to the treatment of others who made zero attempt. I would at least make an effort to learn the basics! I used a combination the Coffee Break French podcast and the Duolingo iPhone app. The podcast is great for multitasking (It kept me entertained in traffic AND during laundry!), and the app is great for visual learners (also works offline, so you can keep yourself occupied on the plane!)

Navigation: We got lost A LOT. That is, until we discovered the ‘save map for offline use’ option on the Google maps app. I have no idea how it does it, but it knew where we were despite the fact that I had neither cellular data or wifi. Also, this Paris Metro app was a total life saver! It allows you to plan your route and works offline. Win!

Blogs: There are a staggering amount of amazing blogs out there devoted to the city of Paris! A couple of my favorites – Paris in Four Months is packed with absolutely stunning photography. Even if you have no plans to travel to Paris, I bet you change your mind after these pictures! Pret a Voyager has a wealth of practical info, city guides, and some adorable illustrated French lessons! Paris by Mouth has everything you need to successfully navigate the Parisian food scene, including dining guides by neighborhood and other useful lists (such as restaurants that can be reserved online, and those open on Sunday). David Lebovitz was also a favorite for everything food related. The recommendations are always spot on (especially the one regarding the Bastille market – a must do on Sunday morning!).

As mentioned, I’ll be spreading the details of our trip out over a couple of posts. Stay tuned to see more of our adventure!

Fun fact! l’usine means the factory in French. True story.

Bar Harbor

I hope you all had a lovely holiday weekend! It’s been a little while since I’ve done an ‘out and about’ post so I thought I’d share a recent trip taken with my girlfriends! Since we’re all nearing the big 3-0, we thought it would be fun  to get away for the weekend for a girls’ trip while we still can! Meaning, it will probably be a lot harder to take one of these weekend trips if one of us has, say, a baby or something (leaving the fur babies was hard enough).

Since everyone in and around Massachusetts seems to flock to Cape Cod at every opportunity throughout the summer months, we decided to avoid the hoards of people and and experience something new!

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

I’m not sure how I originally stumbled upon Bar Harbor, but a quick Google search later, I was sold. Bar Harbor is a town on Mount Desert (pronounced like dessert) Island along the coast of Maine. We actually thought people were mispronouncing the name of the island they inhabit until our trolley tour guide explained otherwise. Oops!

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

A quick 6-ish hour drive from Boston (which included multiple pit stops), the town kind of sneaks up on you. After a long stretch of road during which you’re thinking ‘where the hell am I?!’ as you drive by countless gun shops, you arrive at this adorable gem of a town!

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

All picturesque rugged shorelines and a quaint coastal New England vibe. It was absolutely perfect! Quiet enough to give us the break we all needed and had enough going on to keep us from getting bored. And breathtaking ocean views everywhere you look.

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

One of my favorite things to do on vacation (and I understand this makes me sound like a total weirdo) is to venture out on my own first thing in the morning to explore and take photos. So, at 6 am on Saturday morning, I grabbed my Nikon and headed out to capture Bar Harbor. Before you write me off as completely insane, I have some valid points..  1. minimize the amount of time your travel companions have to stand around rolling their eyes as you snap 20 photos of the same thing. 2. Most everyone is still sleeping and there are less people walking into your pictures.

Plus, the lighting. By no means am I pretending to be some photography expert, but you can get some awesome pictures when the sun is sill kind of low on the horizon. I’m quite proud of my first successful silhouette shot..

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

The rest of the weekend was a total blast too! Hanging by the pool, spa treatments, shopping, and remembering how fun it is to just hang out with your friends without a million things to worry about.

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

We did manage to squeeze in some nature/history with a trolley tour to Acadia national park which took us all the way  to the summit of Cadillac mountain!

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

We’d heard that watching a sunset from the top of Cadillac mountain was kind of amazing. And seeing as how we were there on the longest day of the year, it promised to be a good one. Obviously, there was no way we were going to miss it.  With dinner and shopping taking a little longer than expected, we had to literally race to the top of a mountain to catch the sunset. Ever thought you would be in such a situation? No, neither did I.

Well, it certainly didn’t disappoint. I mean, is this for real?!

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

I know that my fondness for sunsets/sunrises is greater than the average, so I’ll refrain from bombarding you with 75 sunset photos. Last one, I promise..

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

Overall, we had an amazing time! I would totally recommend Bar Harbor to anyone considering a vacation in the New England area and really look forward to visiting again in the future! Like I said, there’s plenty to keep you occupied but it wasn’t at all packed with tourists or overwhelming.

Bar Harbor - Tulips and a Terrier

In  case you are planning a visit to Bar Harbor at some point, I thought it would be helpful to include some of the details of our trip!

We stayed at the Harborside Hotel which had a great location! It was literally on the water (above picture was taken somewhere on the hotel property) and a quick walk from where most of the shops and restaurants were located. The room was very comfortable and had a balcony with an incredible view! My favorite meal of the trip was seafood risotto at McKay’s which was incredible. Coffee Hound was our coffee spot for the weekend and featured a large variety of yummy flavors. If you are a dog lover (or are buying a gift for one), Bark Harbor has some great stuff and a big selection of breed-specific gifts (because I totally needed more Boston Terrier stuff).

I hope you enjoyed reading about our fantastic weekend! I’d love to hear what you think! Ever been to Bar Harbor? Planning any fun trips this summer?

Daytrip To Castle Hill

Hello friends! I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! Seeing as how it’s my favorite time of year and all, I’m avoiding spending my two precious days off in the house and instead trying to get out and enjoy all of this New England fall-ness.

Yesterday, we drove up to the charming town of Ipswich to visit Castle Hill. If you’ve never been to Ipswich (as I had not before yesterday), I highly recommend it! It’s quite picturesque..and has a million antique stores, apparently.

Part of the expansive Crane Estate, Castle Hill was once the summer residence of Richard T. Crane. We knew it as the filming location of Flowers In The Attic. The mansions sits atop a hill overlooking Crane Beach (which was unusually pretty for a Massachusetts beach).

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to tour the inside of the mansion as there was a wedding taking place (which obviously means we’ll need to come back).

Daytrip To Castle Hill - Tulips & A Terrier

We did have a chance to explore the grounds, which were quite stunning (especially with a hint of fall in the trees!)

Daytrip To Castle Hill - Tulips & A Terrier

I love visiting old mansions. They’re just so grand! A trip to Newport is long overdue. It totally makes my head spin that someone would go through the trouble of having this built to use it only as a summer house. Like, where could you possibly live the rest of the year that you would leave this?

Daytrip To Castle Hill - Tulips & A Terrier

Anyways! Stunning architecture combined with a touch of foliage makes for a pretty good daytrip.

I just love the fall. The colors of the trees make me want to throw on a pair of boots and whip up a pumpkin latte

We have lot of fall-ish activities planned over the next couple of months, so you can expect to see more of these weekend excursion posts.

What’s your favorite fall-ish activity or destination?

Iceland, Continued

Hello friends and happy Monday! Undoubtedly, you’ve all been eagerly awaiting some additional photos from our recent trip. If you’re just joining us, you can see parts one and two here!

After the the popular Golden Circle route seen in the previous post, we continued to travel along the south coast. As you can imagine, the rest of our journey included plenty of waterfalls..

And then, when you think you’ve probably seen enough waterfalls to last a lifetime. And you decide to put your camera down, because you really don’t need ANOTHER waterfall photo. That’s exactly when you’ll see something that makes you almost want to pinch yourself.

Iceland, Continued - Tulips & A Terrier

So, if I can offer a small tip..do not put your camera down in Iceland. It’s almost like the country is challenging you not to be amazed. So, you’ve seen enough waterfalls? How about one with a perfect rainbow?

I’ll tell you one thing, no shortage of waterfalls in this country. Svartifoss was probably my favorite of the waterfalls. It was a smaller, calm waterfall a short hike into Skaftafell national park.

Also along the south coast, there’s a black volcanic beach. I know I usually use the term ‘breathtaking’ loosely, but there were several times throughout the trip where I literally had to catch my breath. And this was one of them.

I mean, is this for real? I know I mentioned this in a previous post, but I absolutely loved this place! It makes you feel like you might be in a black and white photo.

And then, when you think you’ve seen it all – you’re no longer wowed by waterfalls, taken aback by lava rocks, used to seeing wild horses roam the countryside..

You happen to drive up to this (where I might add, several movies have been filmed – including Batman Begins, Die Another Day, and Tomb Raider).

One of the most incredible parts of the journey is that you would think that you would have to travel thousands of miles to see such a variety in landscapes, but Iceland is really quite compact. And the fact that you’re snapping photos and trying to pronounce upcoming attractions throughout the drive makes it quite pleasant.

I hope you enjoyed following along with us on our journey through South Iceland! We’re currently in the process of planning our next adventure, and are thinking along the same lines of road trip through Europe. Destination and/or tour suggestions are more than welcome!

Iceland, A Road Trip

Today marks a full week since we’ve been back from our trip, and we kind of miss it already. It’s hard not to miss this place! From the never-ending stream of stunning scenery, to the feeling of freedom that comes from knowing that the only thing you have to do today is explore the nearly uninhabited Icelandic countryside..I have to say, readjusting to a life of cubicles and rush hour traffic has not been easy. With that said, I have an abundance of photos (roughly 1200 or so) that I can use to transport myself back in time as I await our next (currently unplanned) vacation.

Before you hit ‘unsubscribe’, don’t worry..I have no intention of posting 1200 photos. But I have decided to break up the photos into a couple of posts. You know, so as not to overwhelm you with the remarkable beauty this country has to offer.

If you are considering visiting Iceland, road tripping is totally the way to do it! The self-drive option that gave us the opportunity to explore at our own pace was perfect! It’s virtually impossible to get lost, since the major highway is a single road that goes around the entire country. And it’s always fun to get to discover interesting things off of the beaten path..it does feel like quite the adventure!

As far the view, I’m not sure it gets any better. Somehow, I don’t think that the camera captured it though. Actually being there in the vast emptiness felt surreal.

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

This would be the major highway I’m referring to,Ring Road. Two lanes. And parts are unpaved.

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

Sometimes it was difficult to focus on navigating because all I wanted to do was take pictures of everything we drove by (this is probably how I ended up with 1200 of them). Doesn’t it look a little bit like you’re in one of those race-car video games? Nothing but road in front of you! I don’t know about where you’re from, but I rarely see such pleasant driving conditions in the metro west region.

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

Please note the lack of other cars in the above photos. This was the case more often than not. We definitely encountered far more horses and sheep than we did people. The Icelandic horses are quite beautiful..and really friendly! Seeing packs of them running in the fields was such an incredible sight! We stopped so that I could take a photo they trotted on over to say hello! This funny guy kept sticking his tongue out at us. The sheep were not as personable. While I’m sure they’re very nice, they run away when you try to pet them.

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

While traveling, I was also recruited by Mazda to photograph a series of print ads. Just kidding, this is our rental. Due to the striking surroundings and lack of people or cars, we kept joking about the fact that our photos looked like a car commercial.

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

At this point you’re probably wondering if we did anything but drive around. Yes! Our first day was spent exploring the famous Golden Circle! Iceland’s popular tourist route that allows you to see several of the country’s famous sights in a short driving time (often done as a day trip from Reykjavik).

Þingvellir National Park holds much historic significance for Iceland as it was the site where the parliament was founded. It’s also one of two places in the whole world were you can actually see the continental drift between the Eurasian and North American plates!

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

Geysir was a short drive from the park. We didn’t actually get to see Geysir erupt, but this is the smaller and more reliable Stokkur! It erupts about every 6 minutes (Geysir erupts 2-3 times a day).

Iceland, A Road Trip - Tulips & A Terrier

Followed by Gulfoss waterfall! The sheer size of which left us pretty awestruck.  See those little lines near the top to  the left? Those are people.

And yes, the person I’m standing with here is the boyfriend you’ve heard me mention from time to time! I’ve recently realized that he’s yet to make it into a single photo here on the blog and at this point you might be suspecting that I’m making him up. So please give a warm welcome to the boyfriend, otherwise known as Jason!

If you enjoyed these, stay tuned for a volcanic beach, a glacier lagoon, and another 60 waterfalls!

P.S. – what do you guys think of the new header? I tried to get fancy with Photoshop.
